The Office of Epidemiology of the Puerto Rico Department of Health confirmed this Wednesday two additional cases of variant B.1.617.2 of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, designated as delta by the World Health Organization ( WHO).
So far, five cases of this variant have been confirmed on the island.
"At this time, there is no need to be alarmed, we remain vigilant in the face of new cases. Certainly, the variants represent a threat to our island," said Carlos Mellado, Secretary of Health of Puerto Rico.

The first case of this delta variant in Puerto Rico was diagnosed in mid-June in a child under 4 years of age who was a resident of the United States and was a tourist on the island.
The minor was asymptomatic and did not require hospitalization.
According to the WHO, the delta variant is classified as of concern since it has evidence that its mutations are more transmissible and reduce the effectiveness of treatments.
The Office of Epidemiology is in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in San Juan (CDC) and the Ponce School of Medicine (PHSU).
