The epidemic is severe, the unemployment rate is high, and entrepreneurship has become a trend.

The Alliance of Supporting the Grassroots Markets organizes the Hong Kong Market Festival in all districts of Hong Kong every year.

Due to the lack of government support, stall owners have to face many difficulties when they are employed.

Some stall owners pointed out that there are certain difficulties in maintaining a livelihood.

In the past year’s market activities, the Supporting Grassroots Market Alliance visited more than 140 stall owners from all districts in Hong Kong and distributed in different age groups. Among them, there are a wide range of goods involved in sales and production.

The main purpose of this survey is to understand the stall owners' needs for setting up their stalls and the support they need in the production of goods.

It turns out that more than 70% of stall owners believe that there are insufficient market hawking opportunities and high rents, resulting in low income. More than 90% of stall owners support making good use of idle space as production sites and storage locations.

The most interviewees hope that the government will set up seed funds to support entrepreneurship and provide training.

There are about 20 million square feet of vacant space in Hong Kong, including vacant school buildings and markets.

According to the survey, nearly 60% of stall owners said they had no storage space, and about 50% of stall owners said they lacked production space.

In-house production is now the main trend, and products are gradually diversified, such as fabrics, food, and accessories.

Different types of goods require different storage space, but the lack of space limits the development of stall owners.

The interviewed stall owner Deborah has been a stall owner for 6 years and usually produces goods such as skin care products, jewelry, food, etc.

In addition to the food being rented in licensed food premises, other processes are handled at home, and raw materials and stock items are stored at home.

Deborah said that it takes one week to prepare for the market for one to two days. Inventory, logistics costs, sanitation, and epidemics all need to be paid attention to.

She said that most stall owners have no fixed job support and their incomes are unstable. Under the epidemic, there are many restrictions on the number of people in the market, and there is no opportunity to promote folk crafts.

There are other stall owners who are not in good health and cannot bear the work of ordinary office workers. They can only rely on the market to "get two meals."

Profits are also very limited. The market before the epidemic could make about 700 to 1,000 yuan. At present, the market may only get a sale of 80 yuan.

When asked about the government’s current support for market stall owners, Zhang Yan, a representative of the Citizens Support League, said that since the establishment of Tin Sau Market in 12 years, the government has not built a fixed market and it is difficult for stall owners to have a stable income due to lack of space .

Zhang pointed out that the government had a project called the "Kai Tak Runway Youth Market" in 2017. It was a holiday to build a market near the Kai Tak cruise ship and organize activities such as workshops and carnivals.

However, due to the lack of support from the flow of people and commercial organizations, the plan is only at the conceptual stage.

Hope that the government can set up a permanent market, increase stall owners and job opportunities, provide sales and operating skills training, and make use of idle space as production centers or sales places, so that when there are insufficient job opportunities in the market, the owners can use their own production and fixation Market stalls to solve the unemployment problem.
