Swiss chemistry reportedly fueled Syrian secret weapons program

SEEN FROM ELSEWHERE - Four tonnes of a product used to make Voltaren are missing. A former Syrian general believes they were diverted to produce neurotoxic fluid.

It is an inglorious episode for the Swiss chemical industry, the undersides of which we are revealing today.

At the end of 2014, Basel companies delivered 5 tonnes of isopropanol and 280 kg of diethylamine to Syria, a country ravaged by civil war at the time.

These two products, used in the production of drugs, can also be used in the manufacture of chemical weapons.

The delivery was made from Basel by Brenntag Schweizerhall AG, the world's leading distributor of chemicals.

His client was the Syrian company MPI, which manufactures the anti-inflammatory drug Voltaren under license from Novartis.

Confessions of a former general

Since this delivery was revealed by RTS three years ago, Brenntag and Novartis have continued to defend its legitimacy.
