The European Parliament passed an anti-China resolution on the Hong Kong issue, and analysis pointed out that it is still uncertain whether the resolution will eventually be adopted by the member states.

According to sources, some EU officials secretly mocked the resolution as "really absurd."

The European Parliament passed a non-binding resolution on July 8 with 578 votes in favor, 29 votes against and 73 abstentions, urging EU and member states officials not to attend the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The resolution is a condemnation of the suspension of the publication of Hong Kong's "Apple Daily", saying it is another step by the Chinese authorities to "disintegrate Hong Kong's free society and deprive the local media and speech.

The resolution pointed out that the "Hong Kong version of the National Security Law" broke the trust between Europe and Beijing and weakened Beijing's credibility on the international stage.

The resolution calls on EU institutions and its 27 member states to reject the invitation to participate in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, "unless the Chinese government makes verifiable improvements in its human rights record."

On June 23, 2021, the last night of Hong Kong's Apple Daily, employees said goodbye to supporters downstairs in the office building.

Some Hong Kong media also quoted a source from the European Commission who revealed that some EU officials were actually mocking this resolution in private, thinking that "this is really ridiculous."

According to sources, the European Parliament’s call to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics has been "gimmed up" because EU member states are participating individually, and EU Commission officials are usually not invited to participate in such events.

The source said, "This is really ridiculous."

He also added that although "no decision has been made in the near future" whether to impose sanctions on Hong Kong officials, it is unlikely in the short term.

The source said that the current situation is not serious enough to cause the EU to unite on the sanctions issue, so it "will not happen soon."
