Pfizer and BioNTech announced on July 8 that they are developing a vaccine booster against the Delta variant of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) strain.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO), China, the Hong Kong SAR government, and the United States currently do not recommend booster injections.

What is a booster?

The immunity of many vaccines will weaken over time, so in order to maintain the immune effect, additional boosters need to be supplemented regularly.

For example, the flu vaccine requires a booster every 12 months, while the booster for diphtheria vaccine and tetanus vaccine needs to be vaccinated every 10 years.

Reasons for thinking that there is no need for vaccination:

WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan said on June 20: "We don't have the necessary information to suggest whether a booster is needed."

Swaminatan pointed out that people at high risk of infection in most countries in the world have not even completed the vaccination, and it is too early to call for booster injections.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on the 8th that people who have reached "fully vaccinated" do not need to be vaccinated at this time.

The FDA and CDC issued a joint statement on 8 that they are preparing to provide the people with the necessary vaccination when scientific research results show that there is a need.

The new crown virus vaccination question and answer page displayed on the Chinese government website stated that booster immunization is not recommended at this stage. The Hong Kong government also stated in the leaflet providing information on Kexing vaccine that it has not yet determined whether this vaccine needs booster.

Swaminathan, the chief scientist of the World Health Organization, attended a press conference at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on July 3.

Reasons for thinking that vaccination may be needed:

Pfizer and the German Biotech Company said on the 8th: "Real-world evidence released by the Israeli Ministry of Health shows that vaccine efficacy has declined 6 months after vaccination, and the variant virus strain Delta is becoming the main variant virus strain in Israel."

The company’s statement stated: “These findings are consistent with the company’s ongoing analysis of the Phase 3 study.” “Based on all the data we have, the third injection may be required within 6 to 12 months after the completion of the vaccination. This is why we I have said and continue to believe that this (reinforcing agent is needed) is possible."

The two companies plan to apply for authorization from regulatory agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the third dose as a booster in the next few weeks.

The statement said that early data from a study showed that the level of antibodies produced by the third dose of the vaccine against the original virus strain and the South African virus strain Beta was 5 to 10 times higher than that of the first two doses alone.

Yin Weidong, chairman of Kexing Holdings, spoke about the protective efficacy of China's inactivated vaccines during the interview program "News 1+1" on China Central Television on June 4.

Yin Weidong said that after the human body has completed two doses of vaccines, immune memory can be established, and Kexing vaccine research has confirmed that if there is a third dose afterwards, the antibody can be increased to 10 times within a week, and even up to half a month. 20 times.

Yin Weidong pointed out that Kexing will spend six months to one year to conduct detailed research and testing on when the third dose is needed, and will make further recommendations at that time.

Why do you think you need to "add needles"?

In more and more countries, people who have been vaccinated have been infected. Part of the reason involves the highly contagious and or immune-evading variant strain Delta.

The United Kingdom, Chile, the United Arab Emirates, Seychelles, Mongolia and Uruguay are currently experiencing high vaccination rates but also high diagnosis rates.

The Conversation, a non-profit, independent news organization, said on the 8th that when an epidemic broke out among vaccinated people, it was when people needed booster injections.

Can "grooved needles"?

According to reports, recent studies have shown that mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) vaccines can be mixed with adenovirus vector vaccines.

Pfizer vaccine and the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) vaccine developed by the American pharmaceutical company Moderna are mRNA vaccines, while the British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford are doing research and development. The product is an adenovirus vector vaccine.

Does vaccinating Johnson & Johnson do not need "additional injections"?

The research results published in the journal Nature on the 28th stated that the "Pfizer vaccine" and "Modena vaccine" may have long-term immunity in the human body.

The vaccinated person may not need to vaccinate for several years.

But some people have questions, what if they are vaccinated by Johnson & Johnson or the "AstraZeneca vaccine"?

What should I do if I am an elderly person or have a weakened immune system?

The CDC has not provided advice on this so far.

One of its working groups said in June that so far there is no evidence that people who are vaccinated by Johnson & Johnson need a booster.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has a similar statement, saying that there is not enough data to support the government's recommendation that those who have received the "Johnson & Johnson vaccine" get booster doses.
