Bad Tölz - No doubt about it, there was also a grizzled Munich lion in the Franzmühle. Not a 60s lion, of course. Kurt Kappelmaier, with his white mane and goatee, also metaphorically resembled a Bavarian lion. Someone who has seen and experienced a lot and has been relaxed about it. In this respect, the city of Bad Tölz hit it pretty well with its “Tölzer Löwe” award, at least for one part of the honored couple. Helga Kappelmaier has certainly gladly accepted the chic porcelain lion, garnished with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The Munich couple was honored on Thursday evening at a ceremony for their longstanding patronage for the city of Bad Tölz. On the same day, the Tölzer City Museum was officially reopened after ten years of redesign (we reported).Mayor Ingo Mehner, museum director Elisabeth Hinterstocker and architect Erich Hackel emphasized once again that the work is far from over with the renovation. “Now it is important to bring the museum to life.” And everyone is an ambassador for the good cause. In a museum like this, one always becomes aware, according to Pastor Peter Demmelmair, “that we are in a long stream of history”.

A Tölzer lion for the Munich lion

Of course, the Kappelmaiers also played their part in the redesign of the museum. Brief explanation: The couple is closely associated with the Munich Messerschmitt Foundation for Monument Protection with their own foundation. They both appreciate Bad Tölz as "the epitome of the Upper Bavarian small town that radiates a lot of culture and has history". That's what Kurt Kappelmaier once said. And to keep it that way, the two of them did their best. For example, they supported the Tölzer Marionette Theater, the restoration of the Kalvarienbergkirche and the renaissance portal of the winegrowers' chapel in the parish church. They also received the “lion” for their latest gift: assuming the six-figure restoration costs for the 300-year-old portechaise, which the museum director Hinterstocker found in the depot. The carrying chair is so rare and unusually made that it was presented by Prime Minister Markus Söder as one of 100 Bavarian treasures at the special exhibition in Regensburg. Without the Kappelmaiers, this showpiece would never have been presentable.

Mayor heals the laudatory speech

The Third Mayor and Cultural Representative Christof Botzenhart recalled all of this in his laudatory speech.

And put another exclamation mark: “The couple never made a fuss about their actions.

Helga and Kurt Kappelmaier are not concerned with satisfying their own vanity or self-marketing, but always with the issue: maintaining and promoting a lively cultural life. "The Tölzer Löwe award was given to the couple in November 2019 by the Tölzer City Council.

Due to the corona pandemic, the ceremony had to be postponed for almost a year and a half.

"Be sure", said Botzenhart to the Kappelmaiers, "that our gratitude has lost none of its warmth and that it is important to us to honor your work on a large scale and publicly".
