Strasbourg-Sana

The European Parliament condemned the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's regime's repression of opposition parties in his country, pointing out that this repression limits their ability to exercise their rights.

Parliament voted on a draft resolution entitled (Pressure against the opposition in Turkey, especially the Peoples' Democratic Party) in the ongoing General Assembly meetings in Strasbourg by 603 votes to two.

The resolution, which was written jointly by the groups of Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, Liberals, Greens and leftists, described the increasing pressure exerted by the Erdogan regime on opposition parties as (worrisome), stressing that this repression “limits the ability of political parties to exercise their rights and fulfill their democratic roles.”

The decision considered that “the decline in the freedom of action of the political opposition reveals the tragic situation of human rights in Turkey and the continuing collapse of democracy and the rule of law.”

The resolution highlighted in particular the situation of the HDP, whose nearly 4,000 members are in prison, condemning the attempt to close the party and the gross human rights violations committed by the Erdogan regime.

The decision stated that the Turkish Constitutional Court had closed six parties so far, pointing to previous decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, which stated that closing parties constituted a violation of freedom of association.

He stressed that "closing the HDP would be a huge political mistake and would deal an irreversible blow to pluralism and democratic principles, and would lead to the unrepresentation of millions of voters in Turkey."

The European decision comes while the Constitutional Court of the Turkish regime is currently considering a case to close the HDP.

It is noteworthy that the President of the Turkish regime, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has turned Turkey into a large prison and prison in which he has imprisoned large numbers of his opponents from various civil, military and media institutions, and closed many parties and media outlets in the context of his arbitrary policies.
