It's a premiere: The Penzberg cinema operators Claudia and Markus Wenzl are organizing a large open-air film festival on the Berghalde for the first time - an exciting thing for them too, as they say.

The festival in the open air is supposed to last 25 days.

At least one film should be shown every evening - if the weather cooperates.

Penzberg - Actually, the operators of the KinoP in Penzberg, Claudia and Markus Wenzl, always thought of trying an open-air festival - as few people go to a cinema in the summer.

It was actually planned for 2020. But the corona pandemic thwarted the bill.

But this year it should work.

From Thursday, July 15th to Sunday, August 8th, the festival takes place on the Penzberger Volksfestplatz.

Films are shown after dark on 25 evenings, two of which are the “Bavarian Outdoor Film Festival” (July 16) and the “Alpen Film Festival” (July 30).

The Wenzl couple invested in open-air equipment

For the open-air equipment, the couple took out a loan from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), which was granted as part of the Corona aid.

You invest between 50,000 and 60,000 euros, says Claudia Wenzl.

The couple bought an inflatable open-air screen, ten by five meters, which they also want to rent, plus a trailer in which an existing film projector has been installed.

As a precaution, the Wenzls will therefore also spend the next three weeks on the Volksfestplatz - in a caravan.

Open-air festivals should not remain a flash in the pan

The open-air festival is not meant to be a flash in the pan. "If it works, we do it every year," says Claudia Wenzl, who expressly thanks the city and the municipal utilities for their uncomplicated approach. You could have gained a bit of open-air experience years ago with the Kochler Kino. For example, that a festival like this should run for three weeks at a time. "Then there are definitely a couple of nice evenings here," says Claudia Wenzl. Because experience has shown that some ideas always fall victim to the weather.

That is why there is no advance booking for the “KinoP on Air” festival.

Tickets are only available at the box office (from 7 p.m.).

Visitors should bring their own seating or blankets.

There are only a limited number of deckchairs available.

The "OK Penzberger Fasching" and the KinoP provide drinks and snacks.

Of course there is also popcorn.

"It would be bad without popcorn," says Markus Wenzl with a smile.

Folk festival area: space in front of the screen would be for around 500 spectators

Claudia Wenzl estimates that there would be space in front of the screen for a good 500 people. Her husband would be happy if 100 to 200 came. "We're excited about it ourselves," she says. The open-air program encompasses all genres, ranging from romance to horror film, according to Markus Wenzl. There is also a horror night with “A quiet Place 2” and a family evening with “Catweazle”. And preliminary performances: “Kaiserschmarrndrama” can be seen five days before the national start.

In the KinoP itself, the program will continue to run during the festival.

The Wenzls reopened it on May 21 after a corona break of several months.

Although it was sluggish at first, as there was still a test requirement, as they say.

It's better now.

However, according to Markus Wenzl, it is still the case that only 40 percent of the places can be occupied.

You have therefore had to send visitors home again.

If the restriction persists, Claudia Wenzl fears, the cinema will only come back through the next winter with government support.
