A 90-year-old Belgian woman contracted two different types of coronavirus at the same time, the first documented case of this double infection.
A statement issued by the European Conference on Clinical Microbiology (ECCMID) in Belgium, carried by the French newspaper Le Figaro for the day, confirmed that a Belgian woman who died last March, it was found through tests that she had been infected with two different types of different Corona viruses, namely alpha and beta.
Alpha and beta viruses are two different viruses, one discovered in Britain and the other in South Africa.
"Both variants were circulating in March in Belgium, so it is possible that this woman was infected by two people infected with two different types of virus, unfortunately we do not know how this infection occurred," said molecular biologist Anne Vankerbergen of Ulf Hospital.
Belgium, like many European Union countries, faced waves of the spread of the Corona virus in addition to problems with the early availability of the vaccine, as its vaccination program slowly started.
