The Egyptian Court of Cassation has confirmed the life sentences for ten figures of the movement of Egypt: this fringe of the Muslim Brotherhood which has turned into violence, condemned for the murders of police officers and for having helped prisoners to escape during of the popular uprising of 2011.

Among these ten people, sentenced in 2019 to life imprisonment - which is equivalent in Egypt to 25 years of detention - is the supreme guide of the brotherhood Mohamed Badie.

These ten people had been tried and sentenced for entering Egyptian prisons with the help of members of the Palestinian movement Hamas, in order to free Islamist detainees, and for having killed police officers during this operation.

At the same time, the court acquitted eight other people of a lower rank in the Islamist organization, who had been sentenced to 15 years in prison for violence, also in 2011. The sentences confirmed on Sunday are final.

The Brotherhood of the Muslim Brotherhood was declared a "

terrorist organization

" by the courts in 2013, after the brief one-year term of one of theirs, Mohamed Morsi.

The first democratically elected president after the popular revolt of 2011, Mohamed Morsi was dismissed by the army, then led by Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi - who has since become president -, thanks to mass demonstrations.

Since 2013, Abdel Fattah Sissi has led a merciless crackdown on the opposition, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood.

Last month, the Court of Cassation upheld 12 death sentences handed down to members of the Muslim Brotherhood, including two leaders of the brotherhood.

The convicts were accused of having "

armed criminal gangs which attacked residents, resisted the police and having been in possession of firearms and ammunition as well as material for the manufacture of bombs

", according to the report. judgment of the Court.
