Novak Djokovic made history by beating Matteo Berrettini and winning his sixth Wimbledon, which also allowed him to reach Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the top of the list of players with the most Grand Slam titles: now all members of the Big 3 have
20
majors
each
.
But
Nole is
going for more.
What records did you reach with this consecration and which ones do you have ahead of you?
The first and most logical will be to win the US Open, which would give him a double achievement: to be the player with the most tournaments in this category in history and to conquer the
annual Grand Slam
, something that only
Don Budge
(1938) and
Rod Laver
achieved. among males.
The Australian did it, as if that were not enough, on two occasions: 1962 and 1969. That year, in fact, is the last in which someone won the first three "big" of the season.
For now, he is on the list of those who achieved
three of these titles in a year
, along with those already mentioned and Jimmy Connors (1974),
Mats Wilander
(1988),
Federer
(2004, 2006 and 2007) and
Nadal
(2010) .
He was already a member of it, since in 2011 and 2015 he also won three (he lacked, of course, Roland Garros, where the Spanish prevented him).
Another would be to win the
Golden Slam
: the four majors and the Olympic gold in the same season, something that only one other person achieved in history: Steffi Graf.
Andre Agassi did it among men, but
not in the same campaign.
The next, somewhat more difficult but clearly possible with the level that the Serbian is showing, would be to become the tennis player without gender distinction with the most Grand Slams of all time.
That list is led by three women: Margaret Court, with 24;
Serena Williams, with 23;
and Steffi, with 22.
It could also catch up with Federer, so far master and lord in the Cathedral: the Swiss has 8 titles;
the Serbian is 2 to reach it.
Can he become Mr. Wimbledon?
Before reaching
Rogelio
, he must match Sampras and William Renshaw, who have 7.
Nole won his third
Wimby
in a row (2018 and 2019, since last year it was not played) and that is already an achievement in itself.
But now he can try to take another blow and see if he catches up with Federer and Sampras, who went on to win five consecutive editions.
At 34 years and 50 days, Djokovic became the second oldest champion in the Open Era.
It is only surpassed by Federer, who won it at 35 years and 142 days in 2017.
Where he takes a clear advantage and proves incredible validity is in the records for those over 30: this was the eighth Grand Slam that he won after that age, while Nadal had 6 and Federer only 4.
Now he can go, in addition to the titles, for the triumphs: at Wimbledon he reached 79 (just 10 losses) and goes for Roger's 150.
In between they have Jimmy Connors, with 84.
And you can also add the combined successes of all the Grand Slams, where Djokovic is second after Federer: 369 to 317 left. Nadal does not reach 300: he has 291.
Djokovic achieved something he had never been able to achieve, which is to win both Roland Garros and Wimbledon (the two most dissimilar Grand Slams in terms of surface area) in the same campaign.
He is the 12th player to do so and the first since Rafa Nadal in 2010.
With reaching his seventh final in the Cathedral of Tennis, the Serbian had already managed to be one of the second in the list of maximum appearances in the decisive match at Wimbledon.
This will be one of the records that will cost him the most to reach: with 7 finals he is accompanied by Boris Becker, Arthur Gore and Pete Sampras, but quite far from Federer's 12.
Apart from the titles, this was the thirtieth Grand Slam final for Nole, who was only one behind the Swiss star and two times the Spanish star.
With this Wimbledon the number 1 in the world reaches four titles in the season (incredibly, three are from Grand Slam, the rest was the ATP of Belgrade) while no other player on the circuit won more than two.
That is to say: with the great ones it is enough to surpass all the others.
