Celebrations across Italy after the team wins the European Championship (Reuters)

Celebrations erupted tonight (Monday) all over Italy after the team won the European Football Championship, following a victory over England at the end of a penalty shootout. Thousands of people celebrated on the streets of the capital Rome, where fireworks were fired into the sky, cars honked non-stop and fans in ecstasy waved Italian flags while dancing and chanting "We are European champions".

"It's amazing, it's amazing, you can not feel better than that, it's amazing, we won the final," exclaimed Stefano Gucci, one of the fans who celebrated in Piazza del Popolo in the capital. The Italians praised their coach, Roberto Mancini, for leading them to their first Euro title since 1968. "Thank you so much to Roberto Mancini and our players who represented Italy well and brought respect to the sport," Italian President Sergio Materella said in a statement.

The last penalty saved by the national team goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donaroma, caused a huge burst of joy in many cities in the country.

Fans filled the Duomo square in Milan and cars also blew loudly in Naples after the win, which was achieved on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the end of 120 minutes of football.

Fans also gathered to celebrate in the city of Izzy in the province of Marca, the birthplace of national team coach Mancini.

"This is very important for Italy, and especially for us," said a fan who attended the celebrations in the city, who held a large flag of his country.

"You gave us a magical night," added the president of the Italian Olympic Committee, Giovanni Malago.

The citizens of Italy, who suffered deeply during the Corona crisis, locksmiths and a deep economic recession, welcomed the victory and expressed feelings of hope and relief following the success.

"It's like living in a dream you don't want to wake up from. Italy has woken up from the plague's nightmare," said 25-year-old fan Gianluca Yanili, who is learning to be a translator in Rome.

But in parallel with the celebrations in Italy, in England the fans were again left empty-handed and disappointed.

In London, local police were forced to disperse a large crowd left outside Wembley Stadium after the loss.

Bottles of beer were thrown and smashed by frustrated fans in front of police forces, who announced that 49 arrests had been made by police officers during the final game.

It was further reported that 19 policemen were injured during the clashes with the fans.

Prince William congratulated Italy on its win, saying England players should be "so proud" of themselves for their efforts.

William, who also serves as president of the English Football Association, wrote on Twitter: "Heartbreaking. Congratulations to Italy on a great victory."

To the English he added: "Unfortunately this time it was not our day. You can all raise your head."
