FOCUS - If compulsory vaccination for all French people is still excluded for the government, many voices are rising to demand it. Little by little, the idea gained ground.

Until a few months ago, the subject was totally taboo.

Even if the government "excludes" it for the moment, the idea of compulsory vaccination for all is gaining ground.

Initially reserved for single caregivers, inoculation could now extend to a whole "field of care", including all professions in the medico-social sector and home help, announced Cyril Chabanier (CFTC) following a meeting on Friday July 9 between the Ministry of Labor and the social partners.

Vaccinated caregivers, and after? Soon, many voices were raised to demand its extension to the entire adult population. On the scientific side, several authorities have come out in favor of an obligation for the general population. The Academy of Medicine said that

"this is the best way to avoid variants

." “

Concerning the entire population aged 12 and over, the obligation to vaccinate against Covid-19 is the only realistic option in terms of personal responsibility and solidarity commitment to preserve their health, that of others and achieve collective immunity

, ”said the academy in a press release. A point of view endorsed by the president of the Haute Autorité de Santé: “

Depending on the epidemic situation, depending on the vaccination rate we have reached, it will consider it

"

,

said July 2 on RMC Dominique Guludec.

"The key to getting out of this health crisis"

On the political side, others are not afraid of words. Former Brexit negotiator and potential presidential candidate Michel Barnier invited Emmanuel Macron to "take responsibility":

"This vaccination is the key to getting out of this health crisis and it must be made compulsory for everyone"

, he said on LCI. François Bayrou agrees on BFM TV:

"My position is that there is no other way out in this epidemic situation than compulsory vaccination for everyone."

A few days earlier, Senators Bernard Jomier (socialist related), Jean-Michel Arnaud and Roger Karoutchi had issued a report advocating compulsory vaccination by focusing, initially, on 24-59.

“The vaccination of caregivers is legitimate.

But its impact is not likely to completely change the epidemic.

The 18-59 year olds are very contributory to the circulation of the virus.

A decision must be taken by mid-July, ”

said Bernard Jomier.

Finally, in an interview with the JDD, the former Minister of Health Bernard Kouchner spoke in favor of a law to make vaccination compulsory, in the process treating the refractory as "traitors" and "deserters" ...

An “excluded” possibility for the government

For now, the government refuses to comment on its proposals, saying that the hypothesis is not yet on the table.

“We will not force the French to be vaccinated.

Vaccination does not have to be compulsory in the general population

,

Olivier Véran repeated.

On radio J, the spokesperson for the executive Gabriel Attal also closes the door to any vaccination obligation… For the moment

“Today, our working environment is the caregivers, not beyond the caregivers

”, a- he specified, stressing that

"the question of compulsory vaccination for the entire population at this stage does not arise"

, even if he has learned to

"never exclude anything for the future on principle."

The fact remains that little by little, the idea of compulsory vaccination matures. 58% of French people are already in favor, according to the Odoxa-Backbone consulting poll for franceinfo and

Le Figaro

on July 1.

"The irruption of the vaccine obligation in the public debate can change the positions of the hesitant, who will follow opinion leaders

,

"

says Jocelyn Raude, sociologist at the School of Advanced Studies in Public Health.

"We have seen this with the reversal of the trend in vaccine intentions, which amounted to only 40% in December"

. Among the most recalcitrant, on the other hand, opening the debate risks polarizing positions.

"

We can see that vaccines put French society under pressure

.

The debate can begin to open, France is not ready to make the vaccine completely in the mores ”

, continues the sociologist.

To date, only four countries have, however, taken the step of compulsory vaccination for the entire population: the Vatican, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Most other countries use bonds for targeted populations, such as caregivers or government officials.
