The coronavirus mutant Delta is spreading in Europe.

Here you can find out in which countries the numbers are increasing particularly strongly and what that means for travelers.

In Germany, most people are currently infected with the virus variant B.1.617.2 - also known as Delta. Infection with Delta is detected in 59 percent of new infections in Germany, according to a current report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) (as of 7/7/2021). The World Health Organization classifies Delta as a worrying variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is referred to as VOC, which stands for "variants of concern".

As the RKI further informs, results from Great Britain indicate a higher transferability of variant B.1.617.2 compared to variant B.1.1.7 (alpha)

.

The Delta variant is also classified as worrying because there is a suspicion that the disease will progress more severely after infection.

First results would also suggest that current vaccinations protect somewhat better against infection with B.1.1.7 than one with B.1.617.2.

However, after a full vaccination there is a high level of protection against diseases and severe courses, according to the RKI.

Delta hotspots in Europe: which countries are particularly badly affected

The Delta variant, which originally came from India, has spread particularly quickly in Great Britain. According to the German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle, more than 90 percent of the corona infections reported in June 2021 were due to the highly contagious Delta variant.

But travel, the European Football Championship and other factors encourage the virus mutant to spread further in Europe

. As the Südwest Presse informs, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain in particular are struggling with sharply rising incidences due to delta.

High-incidence areas therefore currently include Portugal including the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, Great Britain and Northern Ireland including the Isle of Man as well as all Channel Islands and all British overseas territories, as the RKI informs. The following applies to high-incidence areas:

Anyone who has not been fully vaccinated or recovered must first be quarantined for ten days after returning to Germany

. And that can be ended after five days at the earliest with a negative test, so the Südwest Presse.

Many European countries are currently reacting with new restrictions to the spread of the virus variant Delta.

ZDF reported that the government in Catalonia

has ordered

nightclubs to be closed again

.

In the Netherlands too, clubs have to close again and restaurants are only allowed to open until midnight.
