Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations office and other international organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Dr. Hassan Khaddour, affirmed that the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria have undermined its ability to advance the development and industrial sector.

In a statement today, during the forty-ninth session of the Industrial Development Council in Vienna, Ambassador Khaddour referred to the catastrophic effects that the conditions of the terrorist war had on all sectors in Syria, especially the industrial sector, pointing out that the industrial areas were repeatedly targeted by armed terrorist organizations that stole the contents of the factories and destroyed Some of them, in addition to the severe impact of a number of border crossings, especially with the closure of a number of them as a result of acts of sabotage and the spread of terrorist groups, in addition to the use of some of them by some neighboring countries to facilitate the transit of foreign terrorist fighters and supplying them with weapons and all forms of support. All waste treatment plants resulting from the industrialization process have gone out. Gradually out of service, the number of local industrial and handicraft establishments decreased significantly.

At the same time, Ambassador Khaddour stressed that the Syrian government has subsequently issued the necessary legislation that meets the emerging needs of society and in line with the requirements of sustainable development, and is making distinguished efforts to address the negative consequences of these situations and bring them to their minimum.

Ambassador Khaddour stressed the importance of the supportive and fundamental role that the Industrial Development Organization can play in supporting the Syrian government to rebuild the industrial sector as it is the main wheel of development in any country, especially in light of the challenges and obstacles that are currently impeding its development, foremost of which are the negative effects resulting from unilateral coercive economic measures. The side that undermined the country's ability to advance the development and industrial sector, especially in the field of industrial modernization and development, also created a gap in the field of access to new technologies associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Ambassador Khaddour expressed the Syrian government’s aspiration to establish fair global partnerships based on respect for the principles of international law and the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations, in order to support the efforts of the Syrian state institutions to overcome all the challenges imposed by the years of terrorist war imposed on Syria and the new obstacles left by the Corona pandemic and achieve sustainable development goals far about politicization.

Ambassador Khaddour pointed out the great importance that Syria attaches to the close cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, in particular the efforts it made to support the development of the Syrian industry, calling for the organization to engage more in work and cooperation with Syria, especially in light of the circumstances it has been exposed to since 2011.
