Over the past 24 hours, 780 people have died from Covid-19 in Russia, surpassing the previous record of 752 deaths.

The country also recorded 24,702 new contaminations.

The epidemic in Russia is not weakening against the Delta variant, which appeared in India and is more contagious.

The main foci are the capital, Moscow, and the country's second city St. Petersburg, where restrictive measures have been tightened in recent weeks.

5.8 million contaminations

The authorities are refusing for the moment any general confinement, such as that of spring 2020, in order to preserve an already fragile economy.

The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanine, he estimated Sunday that the capital sees the situation "

stabilize

".

Since the start of the pandemic, more than 5.8 million people have been infected in Russia and 144,492 have died, according to official figures.

The statistics agency Rosstat, which has a broader definition of deaths linked to Covid-19, however records 290,000 deaths at the end of May.

Health pass and compulsory vaccination

The fight against the virus in Russia is made more complicated by a sluggish vaccination campaign against a background of public mistrust.

To cope, the authorities have adopted measures such as the introduction of a health pass to go to restaurants in Moscow or the compulsory vaccination of certain categories of workers.

According to the Gogov site, which aggregates data from regions and media for lack of official statistics, 29.4 million people have received at least one dose of one of the approved Russian vaccines, or nearly 20.1% of the population.
