The delta variant of the coronavirus has led to massive increases in the number of infections in several other countries.

How is the situation developing in Germany?

Berlin - The seven-day incidence has been increasing every day for a week. According to the Robert Koch Institute on Tuesday morning, it was 6.5. Exactly one week earlier, the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 4.9. The health authorities in Germany reported 646 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. This is evident from the figures from Tuesday morning, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 4:06 a.m. For comparison: a week ago the RKI reported 440 infections.

RKI President Lothar Wieler said on Tuesday during a visit by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) to the RKI in Berlin that the number of cases has unfortunately been rising again for a few days. With Delta, a variant dominates that is even more contagious than the previously predominant mutant Alpha. Delta spread rapidly, especially in the unvaccinated population. “The virus doesn't take a break. We don't take a break either, ”said Wieler.

The incidence has so far been the basis for many corona restrictions in the pandemic, for example as part of the federal emergency brake that expired at the end of June. In the future, other values such as hospital admissions are to be taken into account more strongly. The incidence is of course important, but vaccination changes the ability to cope with higher incidences without overloading the health system, Merkel said on Tuesday. At the same time, she referred to the risk that high numbers of cases could lead to the development of new virus variants against which vaccines may be less effective.

According to the new information, 26 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 31 dead.

The RKI has counted 3 737 135 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 3,635,900.

The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 91,259.

According to RKI data from Tuesday, the reproductive number, which is decisive for the speed of spread of the coronavirus, was 1.11 and has thus been above the value of 1 for more than a week. The number means that 100 infected people infect 111 more people. If the value is consistently above 1, the number of cases increases. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides. The R value was previously well below 1 for around two months. (Dpa)
