An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the Kuril Islands in the far east of Russia.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said that the tremor occurred at a depth of 12 kilometers from the surface of the earth, noting that there have been no reports of losses or damages so far.
The Kuril Islands are located in an active volcanic seismic zone. Fifty islands extend over a thousand kilometers and belong to the Russian Sakhalin Province.
