Some car manufacturers have advanced, now the EU is creating facts for everyone: A ban on internal combustion engines is likely to be imminent.

Electric opponents remain a hope.

Brussels - It will soon be official. What the Greens are calling for Germany will likely be decided across Europe: the ban on cars with gasoline and diesel engines. The discussions are conducted, the battles are fought, and the electric car - whether with a battery or a fuel cell - leaves the field as the winner. At least in Europe: From 2035 onwards, according to several sources from the Brussels area, the EU Commission wants to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in road traffic to zero. This is an important building block in the EU's plan to be completely CO2-neutral by the year 2050.

A back door remains open, however: Engines that burn climate-neutral fuels, so-called e-fuels such as hydrogen or methanol, could remain permitted in the long term. Toyota or BMW, for example, do not yet want to commit themselves to battery-powered cars as clearly as Volkswagen, for example. And in the case of trucks, the race for the best climate-friendly fuel is still completely open anyway. You can read the full story of the EU-wide ban on internal combustion engines at 24auto.de *.
