Despite Corona: Fewer and fewer companies in Germany have gone bankrupt.

However, the return of the obligation to file for insolvency, which was suspended in the pandemic, could end this trend.

Wiesbaden - In the corona pandemic, there has been no increase in corporate insolvencies in Germany so far.

"As a result of government support and the suspension of the obligation to file for insolvency, the long-term trend of falling insolvency figures actually continued," said Albert Braakmann, head of the "National Accounts, Prices" department on Tuesday at an online event by the Federal Statistical Office.

The return of the obligation to file for insolvency, which was suspended in the pandemic, could end this trend.

In 2020, the number of corporate insolvencies applied for fell to 15,841, the lowest level since 1999.

So far, this development has continued in the current year, according to Destatis.

However, the obligation to file for insolvency has only been fully applicable again since May 2021.

For the period after April, Destatis only has provisional figures from the local courts.

The development so far does not yet speak for an increase in insolvencies, but for a flattening of the curve that has been pointing downwards so far.

According to the preliminary figures, the number of regular bankruptcies in June decreased by one percent compared to the previous year and compared to the previous month it only fell by a good two percent.

In April, before the expiry of the mandatory filing, the number of registered corporate insolvencies was 9 percent below the previous year's figure and even 21 percent below the figure for April 2019.

The industries most affected at the time were construction with 215 and trade with 195 cases.
