Angela Merkel's political career was long and always captured in photographs.
Here come the most beautiful snapshots!
On November 22, 2005, the then 51-year-old Angela Dorothea Merkel took over the highest post in the German government.
The rest is history.
Please smile!

Whether as an animal friend, beer friend or simply as a politician in the Bundestag: Merkel was always a sought-after photo subject in her 16 years in office - and even before that.
When she leaves after the federal election, it is time to review the funniest, most beautiful and bizarre photo moments of the Chancellor's long political career.
Chancellor, you have something on your mind!

If you leaf through the old pictures of the outgoing Chancellor, it quickly becomes clear: Angela Merkel is often surrounded by weird birds.
Sometimes they even find their way onto their head.
What kind of weird bird is that?
+
© dpa / Peer Grimm
Angela Merkel has a bird.
No, that is not meant to be offensive, it really is: In 2007 Merkel took on the honorary sponsorship of this stuffed sea eagle in the Berlin Natural History Museum.

Angela Merkel also sets the tone in the penguin enclosure on Stralsund.
Here she visits her godfather penguin "Alexandra".
The animal eagerly waddles to the fish.
Did she suspect that she got her food from the most powerful woman in the world?
Goose satisfied: Angela Merkel and Helga

Apparently Angela Merkel's love for poultry goes back to the time before her chancellorship.
In 2001 their paths crossed with the Diepholz goose "Helga".
It was given for free.
Was that the beginning of a long friendship?

According to Angela Merkel's taste: However (luckily for Helga) this is not a goose, but a grilled chicken that the Chancellor courageously spears on her fork.
Angela Merkel with roast wild boar

The Chancellor looks a little skeptical at the sight of this roasted wild boar.
All too understandable, the monster seems a bit strange.
Angela Merkel is more drawn to nature, to live animals ...
The cattle and the Merkel diamond

The Chancellor seems to prefer living animals.
The Chancellor presented the unmistakable "Merkel diamond" to the animal audience.
Thumb to thumb, index finger to index finger.
The cattle look over at her with interest.
Wow, a "WhauWhau"

The fact that the Chancellor seems to have a knack for animals is also shown in this photo.
Angela Merkel strokes the Coromandel Brown Kiwi "WhauWhau".
There is a grimace on top.
Is that art, or can it be done away with?

But of course Angela Merkel did not only deal with strange birds in her political career.
She also dealt with art and culture.
During this visit to Paris, the Chancellor appeared to be trying particularly hard.
One look is worth a thousand words

Angela Merkel is known for always staying calm and not showing her feelings.
She almost always succeeded in doing that.
Nearly.
Kiss!

“They also had good times” - that's what you often say about couples who have drifted apart.
This photo suggests: Perhaps there was not always only the Ice Age between Merkel and Trump.
Whisper mail

Secret agreements at the G7 summit in France?
Hardly likely.
And yet we would have been interested in what Merkel whispered to her American colleague here ...
From Kohl's girl to the most powerful woman in the world

CDU boss Helmut Kohl has called Angela Merkel “my girl” for a long time.
In 1991 Merkel was elected his deputy.
The CDU politician later distances herself from her mentor.

There can be a crash between sisters - and so also between sister parties.
Angela Merkel's relationship with the CSU was therefore not always as harmonious as this picture from the beer tent suggests.

Quality time in Bavarian beer tents is one thing - a box of “Merkel's beer” is the other.
To that a hearty toast!
A job that can be a headache at times

Did Merkel drink too much of her own beer?
In this photo it definitely looks like she has a bit of a headache.
But who can be surprised when one is responsible for the fate of an entire nation ...
Don't mess with Angela Merkel!

In politics there is a tough fight.
And Angela Merkel - we don't need this snapshot first - has proven her assertiveness countless times during her career.
Skeptical look

Angela Merkel is considered a big football fan.
And what about handball?
We sense a slight skepticism when looking at the play equipment ...

This photo made headlines around the G7 summit in 2015: Angela Merkel gesticulates, Barack Obama seems to be enjoying the good mountain air in his characteristically relaxed manner.
You almost feel like going on a mountain hike with the two politicians ...
tongue out

© Kay Nietfeld / dpa
A Chancellor who sticks out her tongue to children?
Don't worry, everything was decent here.
The photo is from 2018 - at that time Merkel was attending a school in Beirut - and played a song with the children in which they sang the English words for mouth, nose, ears and the like and touched the corresponding parts of the body.
When the children stuck out their tongues, Merkel did not shut herself off from the fun and did so.
The Chancellor and the national team

Angela Merkel and the national soccer team have a special relationship.
The Chancellor cheered from the stands at important games in the past and congratulated the players in the dressing room after the game.
Even if they are only scantily clad like here.

Right in the middle instead of just being there: Angela Merkel and the then Federal President Joachim Gauck celebrated winning the World Cup in 2014 together with the national team.

After 16 years as chancellor, Merkel probably knows every inch of the Reichstag building.
Still, she seems to have lost something in this photo.
What it was and whether she found it again is not known.
Face to face with yourself

An interesting snapshot has succeeded here: Angela Merkel's side, which is reflected in the surface of a glass case, gives the picture an almost Picasso-like touch at first.
Angela Merkel and the new territory
+
© Marcel Mettelsiefen / dpa
“The Internet is new territory for all of us” - with this sentence Merkel in 2013 sat down in the nettles.
At the time, she had been online for years, as this photo shows.
In 2002 Merkel launched her first own website.
Headwind

During her chancellorship, Angela Merkel had to continually assert herself against critics.
But not only in the proverbial sense did the Chancellor sometimes have to face headwinds - nature literally had her (and her hairstyle) in its sights now and then.

Not only political opponents worked their way off the Chancellor, the advertising industry also repeatedly targeted Angela Merkel.
Like the car rental company Sixt, who printed a new hairstyle suggestion on posters.

The Chancellor also seems to be able to handle exotic animals.
The ring-tailed lemur on Merkel's shoulder looks as if it feels right at home on the Chancellor's tropical green blazer.

Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo caused a sensation at the 2021 European Championship.
At a press conference, he pushed the sponsor's Coca-Cola bottles aside and asked for water.
The company then had to accept falling share prices.
Would Angela Merkel perhaps have preferred something other than water?
By the way, the outgoing Chancellor's favorite drink is said to be red wine ...

... but of course there is no such thing at work!
During a long debate in the Bundestag, Merkel was happy to take a few courageous sips of water.

The corona pandemic dominated political life at the end of the "Merkel era".
During the pandemic, Merkel always campaigned for strict rules to contain the infection process - but just like us, she sometimes had to struggle with her mask.
Merkel, the scientist

Angela Merkel dealt with the "influence of spatial correlation on the reaction rate in bimolecular elementary reactions in dense media" in her doctoral thesis.
The physicist is at home in the natural sciences - wearing a white coat is nothing new to her.

Whether Angela Merkel might end up in car tuning after politics?
In any case, in this picture she leans down in the manner of a real tinkerer while visiting a truck production facility.
The gentlemen around her seem happy that Merkel shows so much enthusiasm for her work.
Merkel, skeptical

The Chancellor looks a little more skeptical when she sees a 3D printer.
Maybe the devices seem a little too futuristic to you?
After all, when Angela Merkel first moved into the Chancellery in 2005, the first iPhone wasn't even on the market.
You will be amazed!

But of course you would be doing Merkel an injustice if you denied her interest in new technology.
During a visit to the Hanoverian trade fair in 2016, she seems very enthusiastic - the then US President Barack Obama grins mischievously.
And huiiiiiiii

The energy transition, which was initiated during the Merkel era, evokes mixed feelings among the Chancellor.
Expensive severance payments to energy companies and lack of understanding among many citizens are not just two of the downsides.
A colorful pinwheel is more fun.
What a cheese!

“What a cheese!”, Klaus Wowereit seems to be thinking.
And who doesn't know it: The hot battle at the cold buffet.
The full tray and the inviting smile of the lady in the hat suggest, however, that there is enough for everyone.
Embarrassing Political Breaks?

Will there also be embarrassing breaks in political negotiations?
The photo of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff would at least be well suited to address the topic in the form of a “meme”.
Merkel, the future singer?

Does Angela Merkel have musical talent?
Unfortunately we don't know.
In any case, she would have worn the right outfit for the publication of a rap song at this carnival event.
The young people would now say: Lit!

The catchy tune is not long in coming when you look at this picture: “Walk like an Egyptian” is the name of a song by the band The Bangles.
It is doubtful, of course, that Merkel really wanted to imitate the corresponding dance.
Cool, cooler, Merkel

Chancellor, most powerful woman in the world and fashion icon?
Angela Merkel was not known for extravagant outfits during her chancellorship.
This fashionable glasses model catches the eye all the more.
Merkel, offended

During her 16 years in the Chancellery, Angela Merkel also had to take a lot of criticism.
She rarely lost her composure.
Photos that show the CDU politician in a bad mood are rare.
However, this snapshot is one of them.
Find someone who looks at you the way Merkel looks at this bratwurst roll

Campaign events can be on the nerves of politicians.
This appointment in Thuringia was apparently an exception, as the Chancellor received a bratwurst roll as food.
Your enthusiasm seems completely authentic.

It is well known that Angela Merkel cheered from the stands at games of the national team.
In “Summer Tale” 2006, she even dared to jump onto the grass when she congratulated David Odonkor on third place at the World Cup in her own country.
The Chancellor and the cake

You might think that cutting an oversized cake is one of the more cheerful tasks of a politician.
Chancellor Angela Merkel looks somewhat disgruntled.
On behalf of our party colleagues, we hope that there will still be a cake for the strike ?!
