The EU aims to become climate neutral by 2050.

This goal is to be achieved with a comprehensive legislative package.

This means considerable changes for the automotive industry in the coming years.

By 2035, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is aiming for the end of combustion cars.

From this year, new cars should no longer be allowed to emit carbon dioxide emissions, said von der Leyen at the presentation of the “Fit for 55” climate plan in Brussels.

By 2030, car manufacturers will have to reduce the CO2 emissions of vehicles in the European fleet average by 55 percent from today's 95 grams CO2 / kilometer.

In addition, a CO2 surcharge is to be levied on conventional fuel in the future.

Stricter regulations for shipping and aviation

Air traffic and shipping are also facing stricter climate protection regulations.

The EU Commission suggested tightening the reins for airlines in CO2 emissions trading by eliminating the free pollution rights over time.

Kerosene should increasingly be added to sustainable, CO2-free fuel and be taxed in the future.

For the first time, shipping is to be obliged to undertake emissions trading.
