More than 93,000 people died from overdoses in the United States in 2020, a level never seen so far linked to an increase in opioid consumption during the pandemic, according to official statistics released Wednesday, July 14.

The number of victims increased by nearly 30% compared to 2019, according to a provisional report from the Centers for the Prevention and Control of Diseases (CDC). Almost 70,000 deaths are due to the ingestion of opiates, especially fentanyl, a very powerful synthetic drug. But the number of deaths linked to stimulants like methamphetamine are also on the rise, according to the data.

The rise began in 2019 but accelerated during the pandemic which caused significant financial hardship, increased loneliness and deprived many Americans of access to care, according to a report from the Well Being Trust.

All the American territory is concerned by this revival with marked leaps in Vermont (northeast), Kentucky and West Virginia (center), South Carolina (south), as well as in California (west).

Since 1999, opiates have killed more than half a million people in the United States.

Producers of opioid-based pain medications, such as the Purdue lab, are accused of encouraging, with aggressive marketing strategies, the over-prescription of their products despite their highly addictive nature.

Becoming addicted, many patients increased their use and eventually turned to illicit drugs like heroin and fentanyl. Numerous legal proceedings are underway in the United States against these producers and distributors.
