The 0-0 draw between

Boca

and

Atlético Mineiro

for the first leg of the

Copa Libertadores

round of 16

had a stellar protagonist: Andrés Rojas.

In minute 34 of the first half, the Colombian referee validated a goal by Pulpo Diego González but ended up rectifying his decision after checking the play in the VAR, pressured by the claim of the visiting team, with its captain Nacho Fernández at the head.

After the header to the Octopus network and the celebration of the xeneize team, the former River did not want to get out of the way and insisted that Rojas, 37 years old and international since 2017, go to the monitor to review what they considered a push from Briasco on the defender of Mineiro.

The referee, who seemed to have complications in his intercom, ended up accepting the request of the Mineiro players, contrary to what the regulations say.

And after several minutes of repetitions, he ended up canceling the goal, causing the anger of all Boca, a feeling that was evident after the game with the statements of Miguel Ángel Russo and Carlos Izquierdoz.

A day after the controversy, Conmebol released the dialogues between Rojas and the VAR, led by Paraguayan Derlis López, clarifying what the Colombian saw to deprive Boca of a goal that was key to opening a match and a very complicated series, against the best Libertadores team according to the statistics of the initial phase.

But when reviewing the video released by Conmebol, it is observed that the one who made the decision for the referee to review the play

was not the person in charge of the VAR but his assistant

, the Uruguayan Daniel Fedorczuk.

"The referee does not observe any infraction during a goal action. The VAR when reviewing the image suggests a field review. The referee, when reviewing the play, interprets a possible infraction by changing his initial decision," summarizes the announcer of the video, then leading to subtitled dialogue.

"Here he comes clean and the player exaggerates," the VAR begins by first saying about a supposed push from González at the time of scoring the goal.

"He feels the contact and lets himself fall," he concludes after reviewing the action of the header several times.

And then he stops at Briasco's contact with Nathan Silva, the friction that he would later end up considering as a violation.

"It is a small contact, a very small contact"

, is the first thing the VAR says.

"It can destabilize it," suggests the VAR Assistant.

"Yes?" Asks the VAR, unconvinced.

"Let the referee look at it," proposes the VAR Assistant.

"Andrés, listen to me ... I suggest a field review for a possible foul," they order Rojas.

The video that Conmebol shares is conclusive: while the referee watches the monitor, Nacho Fernández yells at him and makes bombastic gestures.

"The number 29 (for Briasco) pushes him on the grass, I correct," Rojas ends up saying.

And he affirms: "It lacks in favor of the target, it pushes it".

But as if to finish closing an exchange full of errors, the VAR closes the dialogue with Rojas

not mentioning the 29 of Briasco but the 23, the shirt of Pulpo González.

"Copied Andrés, missing the number 23 then ... is it?", Says the VAR.

And Rojas withdrew without answering and closing the conversation.

In the last hours and as a result of this confusing handling of the controversy in La Bombonera, Conmebol decided to remove Derlis López from the VAR for tonight's match between Defensa y Justicia and Flamengo.

In his place will be the Peruvian Diego Haro.
