Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned again of an increase in cases of coronavirus infection in many Eastern Mediterranean countries because of its dire consequences, as it is exacerbated by the spread of the delta strain of the virus and the lack of available vaccines against it.
Reuters quoted the organization’s regional office as saying in a statement that the World Health Organization is concerned about the possibility of the current rise in Covid 19 infections continuing in the coming weeks, due to its catastrophic consequences. In cases of infection in Libya, Iran, Iraq and Tunisia, in addition to expected sharp increases in Lebanon and Morocco.
The organization blamed non-compliance with public health measures, spatial distancing, increased laxity of societies, low vaccination rates and the spread of new strains of the virus.
The World Health Organization highlighted Tunisia as the country with the highest death rate from the Corona virus relative to the population in the region and Africa and noted that daily infections nearly doubled in Iran over the four weeks until early July.
The statement stated that the total number of Covid-19 infections in the eastern Mediterranean region of the organization, which includes Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia and Djibouti, in addition to the countries of the Middle East exceeded 11.4 million cases, and that the deaths recorded in it exceed 223,000.
