The disaster occurred on the day of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's celebration, and 45 people perished.

An additional 102 people were injured in the incident, which is reported annually.

This is due to squeezing and suffocation caused due to the great urgency of the crowd.

Following the disaster, the government declared a national day of mourning.

About three weeks ago, the government approved the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the disaster.

The position of the previous government, and especially that of the heads of the ultra-Orthodox parties, was against the establishment of the commission of inquiry, but the recommendations for its establishment were included in the coalition agreements of the Bennett-Lapid government under a special clause.

The proposal for the establishment of the commission of inquiry was brought to the approval of the government by Defense Minister and Blue and White Chairman Bnei Gantz and Finance Minister and Chairman of Yisrael Beiteinu Avigdor Lieberman.
