Soak up the sun and visit the World Heritage Site: should you go to Croatia this year?

Here you can find out what now applies to travelers due to the Delta variant.

Island hopping in the Mediterranean, camping in Istria or a cultural trip to Dubrovnik: Croatia is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans - also because you can get there by car. But Croatia also suffered and is still suffering from the corona pandemic as a holiday destination. The hotel and tourism industry suffered financial losses, especially during the lockdowns.

But since vaccination rates have increased and incidences have fallen, more and more holidaymakers have been drawn to the Eastern European country again.

However, the delta virus variant, which originally came from India, is again causing governments around the world to impose stricter travel regulations.

According to the Robert Koch Institute as the leading biomedical research facility of the German federal government, Croatia is currently considered a “simple risk area”.

Areas with an increased risk of corona infection are identified as simple risk areas.

According to the Foreign Office, however, Croatia is affected differently from region to region

.

It is especially advised against unnecessary tourist trips to the Zadar County, as the number of new infections here exceeds 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for seven days.

What German tourists have to show when entering Croatia

According to the Foreign Office, the following entry regulations for German tourists currently apply to Croatia:

  • Travelers can enter Croatia if they have a digital EU Covid certificate (the certificate is digital proof that you have either been completely vaccinated against Corona, have tested negative for Corona or have already recovered).

  • Alternatively, a confirmation of vaccination, a negative corona test (negative PCR test or rapid antigen test) or proof of recovery must be presented upon entry.

The latter can be a positive PCR or rapid antigen test that confirms that a person has recovered from Covid-19, according to the Croatian Interior Ministry.

This must not be older than 180 days and not younger than eleven days, it says.

A medical certificate confirming recovery is also valid.

  • Upon entry, the travelers' contact details are registered for the duration of their stay in Croatia.

In order to avoid long waiting times at the Croatian border, the Federal Foreign Office recommends storing contact and residence details online in advance.

Delta in Croatia: travelers should keep an eye on the news

The delta variant of the corona virus is also spreading in Croatia.

Almost 26 percent of the newly reported corona infections in June were due to the highly contagious Delta variant, as the German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle informs - and the trend is rising.

Therefore, there may be short-term changes for travelers in Croatia as well

.

The Federal Foreign Office therefore recommends following the news in order to be able to react quickly to new travel restrictions.

What travelers to Croatia also need to consider:

  • Cafés are open outside, restaurants are also open inside.

However, the hygiene rules on site must be adhered to (mask requirement in public transport, shops and hospitals as well as outdoors wherever the minimum distance of 1.5 meters cannot be observed).

  • In areas with high incidences, stricter infection control measures can be imposed on tourists and local residents.

  • Access to public transport and shops is restricted to a reduced number of people.
