At least 19 people have been killed in Germany and dozens more are missing following heavy rains in Western Europe that have caused rivers to overflow and swept away homes, authorities said today (Thursday).
In neighboring Belgium, two more people were killed.
Eight people were killed in the district of Oskirchen south of the city of Bonn.
Four more people were killed and about 70 others are said to be missing in the province of Aberwiller, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, after the river Rhine flowing into the Rhine overflowed and sank six houses.
Hundreds of soldiers are assisting police officers in the rescue efforts, using tanks to clear roads of rocks and collapsed trees, while helicopters rescued residents trapped in rooftops.
Following the unusual weather, described as a once-in-a-generation event, car, transportation and sailing services across the Rhine River were halted.
The German Meteorological Service warned of heavy rains in the southwest of the country during the day until tomorrow evening.
