(CNN) -

Colombian President Iván Duque said Thursday that some of the Colombians who have been arrested or killed in Haiti in connection with the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse knew that the ultimate mission was to kill him.

"There are people who, from everything that has been known, had knowledge of that assassination that was going to be perpetrated," Duque said in a video statement shared by the Colombian president's office.

  • Several linked to the plot to assassinate the president of Haiti had been informants for agencies such as the DEA and the FBI.

"On the other hand, it seems that within the group there were people who had received different instructions, but let's also be absolutely frank, regardless of the level of knowledge that one had, what remains in evidence is that there is a participation of all that group in that assassination ", assured the president.

Duque said that the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ombudsman's Office are working to ensure that the human rights of Colombians detained in Haiti are respected, but added that the entire group involved in the murder is responsible.

Earlier Thursday, Duque told Colombian radio LaFM that some of the Colombians knew they were part of a criminal plot, but it was unclear if their ultimate goal was to assassinate Moise.

Also on Thursday, the head of the Colombian National Police, General Jorge Vargas, told a press conference that some of the former Colombian military personnel were hired to detain the Haitian president and hand him over to the United States Anti-Drug Agency (DEA).

CNN contacted the DEA.

A DEA spokeswoman, Katherine Pfaff, declined to comment.
