The Landtag in Erfurt is facing challenges.

Erfurt - In the struggle for an early dissolution of the Thuringian state parliament, a decision could be made on Friday (July 16).

As the Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk and the German Press Agency reported on Thursday, the parliamentary groups of Left and Greens want to discuss in extraordinary meetings in the morning whether the Erfurt parliament should be dissolved on Monday as planned.

Should they decide against it, the planned new election in autumn would be off the table.

The SPD, however, wants to stick to the plan.

Struggle to dissolve the state parliament in Thuringia: Left prefers conference - FDP undecided

Last week, the parliamentary groups of Left *, CDU *, SPD * and Greens * submitted an application for the special session to dissolve the Thuringian state parliament on Monday. In order for the parliament to be dissolved, two-thirds of the MPs must agree. It is uncertain whether this will happen, because not all members of the CDU support the application. The MDR now reported new doubts on the left as well. The majority of the five-member FDP parliamentary group wants to abstain, only one MP wants to agree.

Left-wing parliamentary group leader Steffen Dittes left it open whether a decision by Red-Red-Green will be made by Red-Red-Green on Friday and not on Sunday, as previously announced.

It is a very weighty procedure, "said the head of the largest parliamentary party in the German press agency.

An assessment of the FDP announcement that four of its five MPs want to abstain from the planned vote is also decisive.

This means that only 58 votes are currently considered certain - but 60 votes are needed.

Thuringia: early state elections on September 26th?

For days there has been uncertainty in Thuringia as to whether the two-thirds majority required by the constitution stands for the decision to dissolve the state parliament. With it, the left, the SPD, the Greens and the CDU want to pave the way for an early state election on September 26th parallel to the federal election. The red-red-green government of Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) does not have its own majority in the state parliament - it has been dependent on votes from the CDU for decisions for more than a year.

The background to the planned premature dissolution is the quarrels surrounding the election of FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich * as Thuringian Prime Minister with votes from the CDU and AfD in February of last year. Kemmerich resigned a few days later, his predecessor Bodo Ramelow of the Left was finally re-elected and leads the country with a minority government. Should the state parliament be dissolved, the new election would take place on September 26, the day of the federal election.
