Emmy Award nominations are a Disney tale

2021-07-15T01:52:22.200Z

The jump of the streaming service of the entertainment giant is the most noteworthy of a list in which there are no major relays but there are some notable absences

If classic Disney stories are characterized by their happy ending, this year's Emmy nominations seem like a fairy tale designed by and for their own platform, Disney +.

Despite the fact that the combo HBO and HBO Max leads the nominations with 130, followed by Netflix with 129, the jump

of the Disney

streaming

service

, from the 19 nominations it obtained last year to the 71 it received this year, is the most notable milestone of a list in which we can read changes, especially due to the end of some series and the stoppages caused by the pandemic, but not major relays.

'The Crown' and 'The Mandalorian' lead 2021 Emmy nominations in an even battle between HBO and Netflix

The Crown

, that fantastic tale with few fairies, continues to dominate the drama category with 24 nominations.

Among the main ones, he has achieved, in addition to the best series -Emmy who still resists him-, all the interpretations to which he could choose: Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, Josh O'Connor, Emma Corrin, Helena Bonham-Carter , Charles Dance, Gillian Anderson and Emerald Fennell, whom we know not only for having played Camilla Parker Bowles, but for having been the

showrunner

of the second season of

Killing Eve

and above all, for having directed, written and produced the magnificent

A promising young woman

, for which this year she won the Oscar for best screenplay.

Notable absences

In drama,

The Mandalorian is

tied for nominations with

The Crown

, but it holds far more technical than acting nominations, an unavoidable thing given the series' design. It is followed by

The Handmaid's Tale

(21) with six nominations for its cast, which has not seen a television Academy Award since Bradley Whitford and Cherry Jones won in 2019. The second season of

The Boys

, the premiere of

The Bridgertons

and

Lovecraft Territory

, the last season of

Pose

and the fifth of

This Is Us, the

last bastion of the open series, complete a category that suffers from the absence of

Succession

, winner of last year who saw her filming postponed by the covid.

Also notable is the absence of

Ozark

, whose final season earned him 18 nominations last year.

Another finale, that of

Schitt's Creek

, which won nine awards last year, has left many vacancies in the comedy categories, among which stands out

Ted Lasso

, with his 20 nominations.

The Apple TV + comedy also has the favor of the critics and the freshness of the novelty, and together with the last season of

The Kominsky Method

, it stands out above the rest of the nominated comedies in the main category:

black-ish

,

Cobra Kai

,

Emily in Paris

,

Hacks

,

Pen15

and

The Flight Attendant

.

Special mention, and not for good, deserves that the end of

Shameless

has only received one nomination, for William H. Macy.

But what are we going to ask of some prizes that bypass

The Good Fight by default

The star category of this edition, both by level and by the closeness of the competition, is the miniseries. Here the best of each house is faced: It

could destroy you

, that magnificent treatise on sexual consent that was inexplicably excluded from the Golden Globes;

Mare of Easttown

, the most adult and sober fiction of the year and the one with the best cast, headed by an exalted Kate Winslet who has already won an Emmy for

Mildred Pierce

;

Lady's Gambit

, Netflix's great phenomenon of the year and perhaps the most popular series of all the nominees along with

The Crown

;

The underground railway

, which is led by Barry Jenkins, an expert in winning prizes by surprise - remember the Oscar for

Moonlight in

front of

La La Land

-; and that exciting tribute to television by Marvel, and therefore within Disney +, which is

Scarlet Witch and Vision

, and which has given its platform 23 of the 71 nominations for its fairy tale. The female protagonism of most of them has made the category of best leading actress in a miniseries this year a heart attack: Will Kate Winslet manage to prevail over Michaela Coel, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Olsen and Anya Taylor-Joy? We will have to wait until September 19, the date of the ceremony, to verify it.
