From the point of view of the EU Commission, the fundamental rights of non-heterosexual people are being violated in Poland and Hungary.
Since the governments are not responding to the allegations, consequences are now being drawn.
Brussels - The EU Commission is taking legal action against Hungary and Poland because of the alleged discrimination against non-heterosexual people.
The authority announced in Brussels that equality and respect for dignity and human rights are fundamental values of the EU.
The Commission will therefore use all the instruments at its disposal to defend these values.
Infringement proceedings initiated
For this purpose, so-called infringement proceedings have now been initiated.
They could lead to actions before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Specifically, in the case of Hungary, there is a new law prohibiting publications that are accessible to children and depicting non-heterosexual relationships.
It also bans advertising in which homosexuals or transsexuals appear as part of normality.
Hungary rejects the allegations
Many EU states and the Commission see it as discriminatory for this reason. Hungary, however, rejects the allegations against the law. From the government's point of view, it only ensures that parents alone can decide how they want to organize the sexual upbringing of their children.
In the case of Poland, the Commission believes that the Polish authorities did not respond adequately to their investigation into so-called LGBT-free zones. These were created by several Polish regions and municipalities. The abbreviation LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and other non-heterosexual people or people who do not identify with the traditional role model of men and women or other social norms relating to gender and sexuality.
