In October, the owner and principal of the school, Monica Garcia Villegas, was sentenced to 31 years in prison for manslaughter. She was arrested after it was discovered that she had built a large apartment above the classrooms, the weight of which allegedly contributed to the collapse of the building. According to the Mexican press, cost cutting, corruption or incompetence of construction companies and authorities contributed to the destruction caused by the earthquake, which killed 369 people.
