Mexico's soccer team beat Guatemala 3-0 with a double by naturalized Argentinean Rogelio Funes Mori on Wednesday night in Group A of the Gold Cup, rebuilding its path to the title after having drawn goalless against Trinidad and Tobago in their presentation.

The game, played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, was delayed 30 minutes due to a thunderstorm in Texas.

"I think I am working to be here, I am very excited and happy to continue growing as a footballer and professional, and I will continue to do things well," said Funes Mori.

Mexico took the lead in the 28th minute through Funes Mori, who finished with a powerful shot inside the area after controlling a long pass from Héctor Herrera.

The Monterrey club striker scored his double in the 55th minute when he finished off without a mark inside the area after receiving a pass from Orbelín Pineda, who at 78 scored the third goal when he finished off a cross sent by Luis Rodríguez with his head.

Earlier, El Salvador secured their place in the quarterfinals after beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 with goals from Jairo Henriquez and Walmer Martínez.

The Salvadorans reached six points to consolidate in the first place of Group A, where they are escorted by Mexico with four units, Trinidad and Tobago with one and Guatemala without adding.

"I rescue the dedication and the desire to compete, I do not want to sound like we have done something impressive, we need a lot of work. We have to be cautious because the tournament is important," said the technical director of El Salvador, Hugo Pérez.

The first two places from each of the four groups in the competition advance to the quarterfinals.

The third and last day of the group will be played on Sunday when Mexico faces El Salvador, and Guatemala will rival Trinidad and Tobago.
