How polluted is it by microplastics?

Class 7f of RS Indersdorf and the environmental team are currently exploring the Glonn floodplains.

Indersdorf

- This school year, the students in grade 7f are once again on the road as “plastic pirates” together with Sebastian Kriegl, teacher at the RSI and at the FOS and also the school's environmental officer.

"Plastic Pirates Go Europe!" Is an action by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The action will be carried out jointly on the occasion of the trio presidency of the Council of the European Union in Portugal, Slovenia and Germany in the period from 2020 to 2021. The aims are to strengthen scientific cooperation in Europe, to promote local engagement and to raise awareness of a conscious and careful approach to the environment. The joint action of the three countries shows how Europe can work together to achieve common goals. In this school year, students, teachers and scientists will network and work to raise awareness of the sustainable use of our resources. The students deal explicitly with the topic of plastic waste in the environment and the influence of plastic waste transported into the oceans via inland waters.

The focus of research for the Indersdorfer students is the Glonn.

The class examines the water quality and the amount of microplastics in the river.

In addition, the Glonn floodplains are examined for waste and especially plastic waste in defined research fields.

“In the course of this, our native animals in the river and in the floodplains are also researched and mapped in cooperation with the specialist in biology,” says Sebastian Kriegl.

“Our results and records are then forwarded to leading universities in Europe and evaluated there.

"The results can be viewed on the website www.plastic-pirates.eu/de from autumn."

The students also develop strategies on how plastic waste can be avoided in everyday life.
