The biotech company Roche Diagnostics is planning a new, large research building with over 800 workplaces in Penzberg.

A small part of the jobs will be created.

According to Roche, the investment is in the order of up to 250 million euros.

The approximately 33 meter high building will be erected on the southern edge of the factory premises.

Penzberg - Actually, the construction committee meeting on Tuesday was only concerned with a construction pit.

Roche Diagnostics had applied for permission to dig it in the area of the southern parking lot.

However, there is a big project behind this: the construction of a new laboratory building.

City architect Justus Klement said at the meeting that it should house offices and laboratories.

He showed a model view of a six-story building.

There is space for up to 830 employees.

This would include 130 new jobs, it said.

Roche: "An important milestone for the laboratory work of the future"

Roche Diagnostics largely confirmed the information on Wednesday. The company announced that a new diagnostics research building was planned, namely with the name “Laboratory Excellence Accelerator Penzberg”, or LEAP for short, the English word for “jump”. The aim is to express that this is "an important milestone for laboratory work in the future," says Roche. The working world in the laboratory is holistically geared towards today's and, as far as possible, future needs, "in order to continue to ensure excellent research and development at the location in a state-of-the-art working environment". The company had already announced in May 2020 during a visit by Prime Minister Markus Söder and Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn that a new research building would be built. This happens independently of the expansion plans in the north of the Penzberg factory premises, for which a development plan procedure is currently in progress.

About 33 meters high building on part of the large car park

According to Roche, according to the current state of planning, a basement, six utility floors and a technical center are planned on the top floor, all in all around 33 meters, which is about as high as the "Labor-Office-Complex" (LOC) inaugurated in 2017. Due to the ongoing planning, the company is not yet able to name a specific investment amount. However, according to Roche, it should be in the order of magnitude of up to 250 million euros, which was mentioned during the Söder-Spahn visit. In the current version, according to Roche, “a workplace will be created for around 830 employees, around two thirds of them laboratory employees”. Around 60 percent of all diagnostics researchers who are currently spread across the site or who work in Munich would be brought together in the building. There would also be space for new employees. The company in Penzberg currently has around 6,800 employees.

Roche is hoping for the first groundbreaking in the fourth quarter of 2021, if the weather permits. Completion is planned for 2024.
