Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced today (Thursday) that he is relinquishing the mandate to form the government, eight months after taking office.
This is after a meeting with President Michel Aoun, which lasted only about 20 minutes.
"It is clear that we can not agree with the honorable president," Hariri told reporters after the meeting.
"That is why I am giving up the formation of the government."
Hariri was due to replace Acting Prime Minister Hassan Diab, who submitted his resignation after the disaster at the port of Beirut in August last year.
However, the disputes over the identity of the ministers were not resolved throughout this period, when the economic distress of the citizens intensified.
