Two men found dead in a hotel room in Gianni Versace's former mansion in Miami Beach apparently died by suicide, police said Thursday.

Versace was murdered in front of his home exactly 24 years ago, on July 15, 1997.

Miami Beach police went to The Villa Casa Casuarina hotel, as the late designer's home is now known, around 1:20 p.m. after receiving a call from housekeeping about the bodies found.

Ownership and management have changed hands, but the opulent style remains.

Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said Thursday morning that investigators believe the two men died by suicide.

"At this time, the scene is contained in the hotel room and detectives have launched a death investigation," police said Wednesday.

The final cause of death will be determined by the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office, Rodriguez said.

The Versace family sold the building in 2000.

He had bought the home in 1992 and spent $ 33 million on improvements such as the south wing expansion, pool and garden, property agents said when the property came back on the market in 2012.
