The Liège region on the German and Dutch borders has been hardest hit; at least ten bodies have so far had to be recovered in the two municipalities of Verviers and Pepinster.

Particularly due to the many estuaries of the Meuse near Liège, some communities were flooded, including the Ourthe and the Vesdre.

On Friday night, the Meuse had its highest level since records began 110 years ago.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes along the Meuse in some localities in the south of the Netherlands. Prime Minister Mark Rutte has already visited Venlo and described the situation as "terrible".

So far, 120 people in Germany and Belgium have lost their lives due to the floods.

Luxembourg and the Netherlands have not yet recorded any deaths.
