The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education held a press conference today (16th). Chairman Lin Xiaofeng announced that a talent development plan will be launched in September this year. Many professionals, scholars and distinguished persons from different industries have been invited to cooperate and provide mentorship courses. Hope Gifted students can develop their abilities when they discover their interests and talents, and gradually train them to become experts. Therefore, future training will be more scaled and systematic than the current ones.

Xu Zhiguang, acting co-CEO and chief technology officer of ASTRI, said that he will cooperate with the Academy to enhance students' awareness and interest in innovation and technology as soon as possible, and help expand the scientific and technological talent pool in Hong Kong.

The most gifted students are engaged in the healthcare and education industries

The Academy implemented a two-year pilot program for talent cultivation, including STEM, humanities and leadership training.

Huang Jinyao, the dean of the Academy, said that many of the participating trainees have improved their social skills and have a clear understanding of the way forward.

Most students expect to have work experience, among which science (physics and chemistry) and social science (business, finance, economics and psychology) are more popular.

As for science, social sciences, and medicine, university courses are also popular among students. Among the professions they enter, the healthcare industry is the most popular choice, followed by the education industry.

Jiang Yongzhen (first from left) is one of the students who participated in the talent cultivation pilot program. She described the one-to-one guidance under the mentorship program, which is more convenient for exploration than the traditional "passive learning" mode of schooling.

Trainees: The mentorship program is better than "passive learning" in school

Jiang Yongzhen, one of the participants of the pilot project, loves physics very much and is Huang Jinyao's "apprentice". She and four teammates participated in the "Crack the Safe" International Physics Championship 2021 organized by the Davidson Institute of Israel earlier, and won Third in the world.

Jiang Yongzhen said that under the mentorship program, there is one-on-one guidance, which is more convenient to explore than the traditional "passive learning" mode of school. The personal project work not only enhances her ability to plan and solve problems, but also strengthens her time management and self-motivation skills.

The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education was established in 2008. It is currently a funded institution of the Education Bureau and provides free training for the 10 to 18-year-old Hong Kong gifted students.

In early 2021, the Academy cooperated with secondary schools to set up gifted education satellite centers in Sha Tin, Tseung Kwan O and Yuen Long, hoping to make it easier for students to participate.
