The covid-19 pandemic does not give truce in Latin America.

The region exceeded one million deaths in May and the arrival of the delta variant worries the leaders of the different countries.

According to data from Our World in Data (OWD), the highest rate of deaths from covid-19 in Latin America is that of Peru.

The country has a rate of 5,909 deaths per million inhabitants

The most affected countries

Brazil, Argentina and Colombia also have high rates of deaths from covid-19.

In the case of Brazil, the rate is 2,535 deaths per million inhabitants, according to OWD.

In June, the country reached half a million total deaths caused by the pandemic.

With few restrictions and slow vaccination, the outlook for Brazil is complex.

In Argentina, the rate of deaths from covid-19 per million inhabitants reached 2,227.

The country aims to speed up vaccination, while continuing with restriction measures that are primarily aimed at preventing a spread of the delta variant of covid-19.

Specifically, as of Saturday, only 900 people per day will be able to enter the country by air.

  • Argentina is the fifth Latin American country to exceed 100,000 deaths from covid-19

The death rate from covid per million inhabitants in Colombia is 2,256.

The pandemic crisis has increased in recent months, in which young people have been more affected by the virus than older adults.

More vaccines, the key to stopping the virus

While the countries of the region try to increase the amount of vaccinated population, the process has had obstacles, which represents a global risk, especially in the face of the arrival of new variants.

As part of the commitment made by the United States to help curb the pandemic, the administration of President Joe Biden is shipping millions of vaccines to Latin American countries.

E 75% of the 80 million vaccines will be shared with the global vaccination program covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) and 25% will be shared directly with countries in need, according to the White House.

In turn, many countries in the region have bought Russian and Chinese vaccines.
