Two water rescue trains from Bavaria made their way to the disaster area in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday night.

The Fürstenfeldbruck district water rescue service has assumed a leading role.

The water guards are organized by the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK).

This was entrusted by the white and blue Ministry of the Interior with the task of helping in the flood area.

Bavaria is responding to a call for help from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The water rescue service's disaster control water rescue trains had already been put on heightened alert.

Therefore, the units from Upper Bavaria and Lower Franconia were able to react quickly.

The BRK-Fürstenfeldbruck takes over the command of the rescue train in Upper Bavaria.

It also provides a platoon leader and an emergency control vehicle as well as a crew transporter.

The crew consists of ten rescue workers: seven from Olching, two from Mammendorf and one from Landsberger.

Dachau, Freising, Paffenhofen, Traunstein, Berchtesgaden, Rosenheim and Ingolstadt also have a contingent.

That night the train gathered at the motorway service station in Zusmarshausen.

From there, the rescuers set off to the northwest at 1.30 a.m.

At 10 a.m. they reached a so-called staging room in Mönchengladbach.

Rescue from houses

The forces from Bruck specialize in rescuing people from houses. "When the water is around the building, we come by messenger," explains Rainer Bertram, district chief of the BRK-Fürstenfeldbruck. If necessary, the emergency services can also step into the floods. The water rescuers have boats, protective equipment and everything else they need with them and can work independently in the disaster area. Thanks to the so-called logistics component that the BRK Dachau brings with it, the rescuers can also provide themselves with food and sleeping places 24 hours a day.

The emergency services will have to deal with massive infrastructure damage, trapped residents and an unclear number of missing and dead people on site. BRK boss Bertram: "We wish you all a successful mission and, above all, a healthy return home." How long they will be needed in the flood area is still completely open.
