Two mothers from Allershausen spent months getting intensive information.

Conclusion and demand: Air filter devices have to be found, and as quickly as possible.

Allershausen

- Concern for the health of children has led to the desire for additional protection in schools and daycare centers against infection with corona viruses during the pandemic. In the meantime, two mothers from Allershausen, on behalf of many parents, ask those responsible to take action. It is clear to them: just ventilation is not enough. Air filters for all facilities are needed. And quickly.

“The situation is so clear, it couldn't be any clearer.

We don't understand why action is not finally taking place. ”Jennifer Reinhard and Tanja Göbel-Nowak from Allershausen are at a loss.

The two of them cannot understand why the Freising district has not long since purchased air filter devices for all schools.

And also not, why not all headmasters approach the material costs authorities with the demand - the district of Freising or, in the case of elementary schools, the municipalities.

However, the two women do not make the request for air filter devices without first having informed themselves fully.

Not without the in-depth knowledge “that air filters are an important and indispensable component in protecting our children”.

After months of research, an expert in the matter

“Jennifer Reinhard is now an expert in the field of air filter devices.

What she has acquired in terms of knowledge and expert opinions, certainly not many in the district have ", says Tanja Göbel-Nowak about the colleague.

It was at the end of 2020, in the middle of the second lockdown, when Jennifer Reinhard started contacting professors.

“I had studies sent to me, read me in, made contact with various parenting initiatives.” She always had two things in mind: What can be done to protect the children's health in the best possible way?

And: How can school closings be prevented?

Protecting the health of children on this path is a top priority, "because there is no approved vaccine for children under the age of twelve and there is no STIKO recommendation for children between the ages of twelve and 17," she says.

Due to the current hygiene regulations in schools, neither children nor teachers are protected as best as possible.

And: As soon as most adults are vaccinated at some point, the youngest would be the only remaining target of the virus, Reinhard quotes an epidemiologist.

The bottom line of all research: ventilation is not enough

In their extensive research, the two women from Allershausen came to the same conclusion again and again: just ventilation, which is constantly being propagated by the authorities as sufficient, is not enough, as the term ventilation cannot be defined due to many non-calculable influencing factors. “Of course it is an important component. But when I get behind the wheel of my car today, I don't say that the seatbelt is sufficient, I don't need an airbag, I don't need one, ”says Tanja Göbel-Nowak, explaining how important several components are. "Specifically, the ventilation, air filter devices and - also very important - Plexiglas partition walls."

Another advantage - especially in the cold season: If mobile air filters are used in the classrooms, you only have to ventilate to supply fresh air and thus to reduce the CO2 content.

The virus is filtered out through the air filter.

In any case, the two of them do not understand why ventilation is traded as the sole bringer of salvation.

"It is a fact that no air exchange takes place if there is only a slight temperature difference between inside and outside and there is also no wind - the viruses then remain in the room, despite the windows being open." Reinhard has had this confirmed by experts as well, according to the FT discuss the relevant studies.

Several studies prove the effectiveness of air filter devices

The effectiveness of air filter devices has been proven in several studies, such as that by Prof. Dr.

Christian Kähler from the Bundeswehr University in Munich, with whom Jennifer Reinhard is in close contact.

And also Prof. Dr.

Joachim Curtius from the Goethe University in Frankfurt has proven its effectiveness in a study.

The two of them are also in contact with the Federal Environment Agency and have had the ventilation situation at a Freising grammar school checked using a photo of the open windows.

As a result, the office came to the conclusion "that this type of ventilation is not sufficient here".

The conclusion of the women: "Not as the city of Freising claims in a newspaper article that the mobile air filters offer pseudo-security, but the ventilation does that." With her knowledge, Jennifer Reinhard approached both the district administrator and the city of Freising.

She has even obtained offers from specialist companies that show that the maintenance costs of 1000 euros per device, as the district office cited as a counter-argument, “are simply not correct”.

Frustration at the ignorance of those responsible

Reinhard and Göbel-Nowak would have wished that with so much knowledge and so much valuable information that they were able to present - and that they did - arouse more interest on the part of those responsible. Instead, however, one side always talked its way out of the other. The children of the two women attend a school in Freising. The headmistress had shifted the responsibility to the material expense bearers, but it was heard from their side that the headmasters had spoken out against such air filter devices - because they were too loud, too maintenance-intensive and and and.

“Surveys among parents, on the other hand, say that 96 percent of parents at our school are for air filter devices,” confirms Tanja Göbel-Nowak, who also complains that the students are also frustrated by this ignorance on the part of those responsible.

“They already see this as a signal that they are not important enough to spend money on them.” And the parents were stunned by the fact that the health of the children in the Erding district is obviously worth more than in the Freising district, like Tanja Göbel -Nowak emphasizes.

The neighboring district has already equipped all schools with such devices.

Hope that something else happens

Now the two hope that they will realize in time that they will not be able to start the new school year without air filter devices.

“The summer holidays are just around the corner, and if the decision should still be made, the Freising district would not be the only one ordering equipment.” Both of them are aware that this costs a lot of money.

“But we are in the middle of a pandemic, then we have to put other things on the back burner.

- It's about the health of our children. "
