For the second time in history, a film made by a woman wins the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Titane

, by the French Julia Ducournau, won this Saturday, July 17, the award for the best film of the 74th edition of this festival, as announced, presumably by mistake, the president of the jury, Spike Lee.

The order of delivery of the awards always leaves the winner of La Palma as the last to be announced, as it is the most important award of the festival, but Lee was confused when asked about the list of honors before the surprised gaze of his fellow jury members.

However, the announcement was resumed in the established order and the Palme d'Or has not yet been officially announced.

Ducournau, 37, won the highest award, 28 years after the New Zealander Jane Campion did it for

The Piano Lesson

, ex aequo with

Farewell to my concubine

, by Chinese Chen Kaige.

So in 74 editions, only two female filmmakers won the top prize at Cannes.

Ducournau's film is the most transgressive and violent of the 24 competing for the Palme d'Or. Starring actress Agathe Rousselle, the film tells the story of a woman turned into a convulsive murderer who feels a sexual attraction to cars.

The jury of the Cannes Film Festival also consecrated two actors hardly known to the general public, the American Caleb Landry Jones, and the Norwegian Renate Reinsve, with the acting awards for their roles in

Nitram

 and

The Worst Person in the World

Caleb Landry Jones, who has had supporting roles in American independent cinema, plays the author of a massacre that traumatized Australia in 1996, while Reinsve plays a millennial in the midst of existential crisis.
