After the flood disaster in western Germany, the Greens are calling for quick help for those affected - and then a joint effort for more climate protection.

Munich - Above all, the saving of human lives is still the top priority, said Federal Chairman Robert Habeck on Saturday in a greeting for a small online party conference of the Bavarian Greens.

Then those who have been saved must be helped quickly and unbureaucratically.

And then, on the one hand, flood protection must be given more space - and on the other hand, greater efforts are needed for more climate protection and the common fight against global warming.

Habeck explained that the flood disaster was not due to climate change alone - various factors came together here.

The increase in extreme weather events shows, however, that the climate is getting warmer.

"Everything will be more extreme," warned Habeck.

Not only in the interests of future generations, but also in our own interests, we finally have to act: expand renewable energies, support the economy and transport in becoming climate-neutral.

The Bundestag election is about a "fundamental political setting," stressed Habeck.

The Greens chief said it was "tragic and bad" that the catastrophe these days had to remind people of this.

“What we protect is people's lives,” says Habeck.

And if you protect the climate, you are ultimately also defending the open society.
