The Hama Agriculture Directorate initially estimated the governorate’s production of the pistachio crop for the current season at more than 24 thousand tons, with 8252 tons for irrigated and 16,496 tons for rainfed, with preparations for harvesting the crop.
The director of Hama Agriculture, Engineer Abdel Moneim Sabbagh, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the total areas planted with pistachio trees amounted to 213,438 dunums, of which 58,949 dunums were irrigated and the rest was rain-fed. The northern provinces, such as Suran, Taybet al-Imam, and the eastern regions, such as Salamiyah and Sabboura.
He pointed out the economic importance of the pistachio fruits, which are used in the manufacture of many luxurious nuts, oriental sweets and ice cream.
For her part, Engineer Laila Azzouz, Head of the Planning and International Cooperation Department at the Directorate of Agriculture, pointed out that the total number of pistachio trees reached about 3,322,000 trees, of which about 874,128 trees are in irrigated lands and about 2,448,000 trees are in rain-fed lands.
