", nearly a week after closing its border with its neighbor following the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. This decision aims to maintain Haitian trade "

at the levels required to reduce the possibility of a general shortage that would cause social instability and migratory flows

", according to the presidency.

The Dominican Republic had closed its border with Haiti on July 7 a few hours after the assassination of Jovenel Moïse at his home by an armed commando.

It had also strengthened its military presence at the border, an area "

in total peace

" and "

totally secure

" according to Dominican President Luis Abinader.

Binational markets in border provinces had been suspended.

The Dominican Republic and Haiti, which share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, have a common border of some 380 km through which passes a huge flow of people in an irregular situation, mainly Haitian immigrants in search of better living conditions.
