“That's the wrong way”: Kreis doesn't equip all classrooms with air filters

The district has now decided against installing large air filters in the schools.

An appraiser should now assess the situation.

District

- The rooms of district schools should not necessarily be equipped with air filter systems.

The circle relies on tailor-made solutions in individual cases.

Experts should evaluate the situation in grammar schools, secondary schools and vocational schools.

With the decision taken on Thursday, the parliamentary groups initiate a change of direction in the district's corona policy.

The district office actually wanted to equip all classrooms and specialist rooms in the district's own schools with mobile air filter systems.

The background to this is the new version of the Free State's guideline on the promotion of air filters, according to which up to 50 percent of the investment costs are subsidized.

Mayor: Incorrectly placed devices put children at risk

The building committee was not impressed by the unusually generous use of funding. “Buying equipment just because there are grants is the wrong way,” said Brunnthal's Mayor Stefan Kern (CSU). Some district councilors even fear negative effects: Incorrectly placed devices could unnecessarily endanger children, warned Alexander Greulich (SPD): The systems suck in aerosols, past students who were previously safe. "It makes no sense to procure devices just to serve a mood of fear," said Ismaning's mayor. The decision is made at the end of the month in the district council.

Despite technical advances in filter technology, the parliamentary groups recognize that even the most sophisticated systems are no substitute for correct ventilation.

So even in winter: open the window.

A study by the Federal Environment Agency advises ventilations.

"Placebo effect"

Mobile filter systems and a few minutes of shock ventilation reduce the risk of infection in classrooms drastically, according to District Administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU).

"If there is also mouth and nose protection, we are well below five percent." The mask alone reduces the risk of infection to 12 percent.

Perhaps it is the sight of fewer and fewer people wearing masks in public that led the parliamentary groups to reject the easier route of flat-rate subsidies.

"Beware of a false sense of security," said Greulich in connection with this: not using masks because of filter systems would be fatal.

Mayor Kern spoke of a "placebo effect" that at best calms the nerves.

Otherwise not much more would be achieved than burn money.

Specialist office should work out details

Ottobrunn's mayor Thomas Loderer (CSU) proclaims an educational mandate: In his opinion, proper ventilation should take on the priority of a primary basic knowledge.

Under these circumstances it is forbidden to spend unnecessary money on air filters.

Loderer had ten filter systems purchased for his community at a price of 4100 euros each.

The amount is above the price calculated by the district, where they wanted to get 90 devices for á 3500 euros.

If necessary, Loderer would dig a little deeper into his pockets in order to guarantee the quality required in individual cases.

If, for example, ventilation is not possible.

The details are now to be worked out by a specialist office, with the involvement of the special purpose associations and the municipalities.

But Loderer does not want to know anything about a “decision in the area”.
