British Open: Morikawa phenomenon still writes history at Royal St George's

2021-07-18T18:54:22.280Z

American prodigy Collin Morikawa won the 149th British Open, with a total score of -15. He was two strokes ahead of his compatriot Jordan Spieth (-13), four Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen (-11) and broke some records.

The 149th British Open ended under the sun and without wind. Truly unusual weather conditions for a British. For his baptism in the British Grand Slam, Collin Morikawa did not experience a "real" "the Open". Regardless of whether the weather is good, rain or shine, the 24-year-old is capable of winning anywhere. A real phenomenon of precocity, Morikawa, 24, wins his second Major after the USPGA 2020 and becomes the first player in history to triumph in two Grand Slams for his first participation. He becomes the second in history after Tiger Woods to win the USPGA and the British Open before 25 years old. And to think that it was even the very first time that he came to play on the Old Continent as a professional ...Morikawa is also the first American to win at the British Open since 2007 and… Jordan Spieth, his runner-up this Sunday.

With one final blank bogey card, and only four small bogeys recorded during four days, Morikawa was exceptionally solid. Starting one stroke behind the leader of the 3rd round, the South African Louis Oosthuizen, Morikawa was four strokes ahead at nine holes from the end, thanks to a perfectly controlled go in - 3. The world number four took controls the tournament after birdie on the par five of the seventh hole, while his partner Louis Oosthuizen had at the same time committed a bogey, after two bunker exits. After a bad start with two bogeys on his first six holes, Jordan Spieth woke up with an eagle at 7, followed by 4 birdies on the next seven. A hell of a load.

Thanks to one of the birdies at 13 and 14, the American came back from leader Morikawa.

But the prodigy never folded.

Solid as a rock, he made a 6-meter string at 14 (par 5) to take two shots in advance and saved a badly started par on 15 with a new perfectly controlled four-meter putt.

The South African Louis Oosthuizen, leading in the first three rounds, ends his Sunday with a card of 70 (+1), for a bitter podium, he who multiplies the places of honor this year (2nd at the US Open and the USPGA).

As for Jordan Spieth, he confirms his return to his best level.

It remains to unlock the Grand Slam counter again.

The charges of Koepka and Rahm

The quadruple winner in Major, the American Brooks Koepka, returned a final card of 65 (-5) and jumped in the standings to take 4th place with a total score of 68. Sunday also bright for Jon Rahm.

Brilliant in the big game but long lacking in putting success, the Basque found his way back to the holes in the finish with four consecutive birdies at holes 13, 14, 15 and 16. With a total score of -11 total, he finished on the podium alongside Louis Oosthuizen.

The winner of the US Open will recover his place of world No. 1 on Monday at the expense of Dustin Johnson.

The American however also animated Sunday with a 67 (-3), which propels him in 7th position to -7 alongside Robert MacIntyre.

Hebert smiles, Rozner grimaces

With a very good last card of 67 (-3), Benjamin Hebert completed his British Open with a good note this Sunday on the course of Royal St George's. Like Thursday (67, -4), he signed a new blank bogey card. Le Briviste will finish his third British Open in 33rd place at -2 overall. Less success this Sunday for Antoine Rozner. The Racing player returns a final card of 74 (+4) to end his week in 59th place at +2.
