Afghanistan has withdrawn its ambassador from Pakistan.
The diplomat's daughter had previously been temporarily kidnapped.
The Afghan Foreign Ministry announced that other high-ranking employees of the representation had also been ordered back to Kabul until the crime had been fully investigated.
According to the authorities, 26-year-old Silsila Alichil was kidnapped by unknown persons on Friday, but was released after a few hours with injuries and ankle marks on her wrists and ankles.
The Pakistani Ministry of the Interior said on Saturday that Prime Minister Imran Khan attached great importance to the incident and wanted the perpetrators to be caught within 48 hours.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday that the recall of the Afghan ambassador was regrettable and that the decision would be revised.
Relations between the two neighboring countries have long been strained.
The Afghan government accuses Pakistan of supporting the radical Islamic Taliban rebels.
Pakistan, in turn, accuses Afghanistan of allowing militants to penetrate and attack Pakistan from Afghan territory.
According to observers, Pakistan plays an important role in talks between the Taliban and the government in Kabul on the future of Afghanistan.
Since the withdrawal of western troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban have been advancing into ever more provinces.
Most recently, they said they controlled 85 percent of the country.
